Today in Labor History

Dec. 11, 2012
Michigan becomes the 24th state to adopt “right-to-work” legislation. The Republican-dominated state Senate introduced two measures — one covering private workers, the other covering public workers — by surprise five days earlier and immediately voted their passage; the Republican House approved them five days later (the fastest it legally could) and the Republican governor immediately signed both bills.  ~ Labor Tribune

US Postal Workers Are Fighting Massive Service Cuts
Posted On: Dec 05, 2024
Dec. 5, 2024 | JOBS | Workers are battling an overhaul of the US Postal Service (USPS) that would cost thousands of jobs and slow the mail for half the country. Postal workers are the nation’s biggest union workforce — 585,000 strong, split across four unions. They’re half women, 30 percent black, and 16 percent veterans. Thousands of their jobs are at stake under Postmaster General Louis DeJoy’s ten-year “Delivering for America” modernization plan, which would close two hundred mail processing plants and funnel all mail to sixty mega-plants called regional processing and distribution centers (RPDCs), each with a football field–sized parcel sorting machine — a series of conveyor belts, scanners, and chutes that can sort five thousand packages an hour. USPS is chasing its competitors Amazon, UPS, and FedEx… Jacobin
