Costco Teamsters rally in Norfolk, Virginia

May 3, 2024 | (Click image to enlarge.) Rank-and-file Costco Teamsters from Maryland and across the nation joined General President Sean M. O’Brien at a rally Sunday in Norfolk, Va. The rally was to support of the union-wide initiative to organize and mobilize workers at the wholesale retailer ahead of national contract negotiations this year. “Working families in Norfolk have energized national organizing efforts at Costco. Now, Teamsters across the country are standing together to make Costco the ‘good employer’ it claims to be,” O’Brien said. Since the landmark victory in Norfolk, the Teamsters have set up massive organizing efforts for Costco workers across the country. Why this matters: More than 900 Costco workers in Maryland are members of Teamsters Local 570 (Baltimore).

Big Labor’s Communications Playbook

May 18, 2024 | LABOR UNIONS | Support for labor unions grew in 2023, with workers voting to unionize 83% of the time, according to the National Labor Relations Board. The success is due in part to an intentional overhaul of their communication strategies, union organizers told Axios. Union wins have swept the Southeast in 2024, with the United Auto Workers (UAW) recent win at Volkswagen's Chattanooga, Tennessee, plant and the Association of Flight Attendants' Breeze Airways win in Charleston, South Carolina. Mercedes workers in Alabama are voting this week on whether to join UAW, with results expected Friday afternoon. Labor groups across industries have pivoted to nimble, blunt, and personalized communication campaigns that are being deployed through social media, local and national press, and direct outreach to workers. Unions, Lawmakers Protest Boeing Firefighter Lockout

May 16, 2024 | LOCKOUTS | Union leaders and U.S. lawmakers on Monday criticized Boeing's lockout of its unionized firefighters and urged the planemaker to reach a contract deal. Earlier this month, Boeing locked out about 130 members of the International Association of Fire Fighters Local I-66 who rejected two contract offers - a move that last week drew the concern of President Joe Biden. At a rally outside Boeing headquarters in Arlington, Virginia, IAFF President Edward Kelly, AFL-CIO President Liz Shuler, and Representative Val Hoyle urged Boeing to make a deal. "We want to get a deal. We just want to be treated fairly," Kelly told Reuters, who said Boeing wants firefighters to work nearly 20 years before reaching top pay but added he is hopeful talks will soon resume. Towson Apple Store Workers Are Ready to Strike

May 13, 2024 | WORKERS’ RIGHTS | Two years after organizing the first union at an Apple retail store, workers in Towson are preparing to take another unprecedented step: Becoming the first to go on strike against Apple. The union voted “overwhelmingly” to authorize a strike, according to a Saturday news release from the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers’ Coalition of Organized Retail Employees. It’s unclear when the strike might take place. Bargaining is set to resume May 21, union spokesman DeLane Adams said. The union says it represents about 100 workers at the store inside the Towson Town Center. Baltimore Banner
